CSA week 1; It begins!

Or did it ever really end? As the harvest season gets under way and the weather shifts towards summer patterns, I am tempted to celebrate a new beginning. And, of course, there is plenty to celebrate. The clean slate of the winter fields is rapidly filling with newly transplanted seedlings. The young piglets and chickens have moved out to pasture for their first tastes of fresh grass and insects. Our seasonal crew has returned after a winter of rest and time with family. And our extended family of CSA members fill the farm with activity after the relatively quiet winter months. But is it really a beginning?

Maybe it’s the Longest Shortest Time mentality of parenthood (or the disjointed sleep schedule) that has me feeling a bit mixed up about linear time these days. But when reflecting on this moment in the season, I am reminded of the ancient symbolism of the ouroboros; the snake or dragon eating its own tail. This ancient Greek symbol represents an eternal cyclic renewal, and it couldn’t be more apt for the cyclical nature of farming. Rather than a beginning, middle, and end of a farming season, it’s more like an “infinite loop of time.” The seeds are planted, crops grow to maturity and are harvested, and plants are tilled back into the soil to feed the next crop. Our crew and members come and go and come again. Protective row cover goes on tender crops in the spring, comes off during the heat of summer, and goes on again as the fall temperatures drop. And ’round and ’round the wheel spins.

Whether you are rejoining for another spin around the seasons or hopping on the wheel for your first time, welcome to Sweetland! We’re excited for the familiar cycle to continue, and for the new ideas, experiences, and opportunities that keep it interesting.

Cheers
