CSA Week 13; Thank a farmer

Every night at dinner time we pull two chairs, a booster seat, and a high chair up to our big pine table and clink forks with each other to toast the meal. Fern has gotten into the (much appreciated) habit of saying “thanks for making a nice dinner!” and even Ida waves a piece of food enthusiastically. On the coffee table nearby is a picture book titled Thank A Farmer. Around here, the message is pretty easy to internalize. Our own vegetables and meat are regularly accompanied by staples, condiments, and treats from our friends and neighbors. Ida is practically living on milk from my childhood friend Paul’s cows at Sweet Rowen Farm. Roughly half Fern’s summer body weight is made up of blueberries from Casey and family at Green Mountain Orchard. I don’t think Chris would get out of bed each morning if there wasn’t maple syrup from Tim Merton in his Terra Nova coffee. And I haven’t met a sandwich that wasn’t improved by a generous side of Mt Pleasant Farm pickles. So many local farmers and food producers to thank!
We are lucky to live in an area with a thriving agricultural economy and a strong tradition of making things from scratch. We’re so steeped in high-quality, small-batch local products that I often forget that this is unique! Doesn’t everyone know where their hand soap is made? Doesn’t every 4-year-old glance out in the field and say “oh, looks like the chickens are about ready to harvest”? Shouldn’t everyone quench their thirst on a hot day with carbonated maple sap made a few towns over? At peak summer we don’t get off the farm much, so we love catching up with some of our producer friends when they drop off their eggs, cookies, kimchi, yogurt, and more for our farm stand. We’re honored to feature the fruit of their hard work alongside our own, and to make it easy for our community to stock their kitchens with all this good local food. Whether you wander through the stand when you pick up your CSA share at the farm or peruse the a la carte items on our LocalLine page, please know that you are voting with your fork for local products and the people who make them. Thanks!

Cheers
