CSA Week 14; Late Summer days

There’s a feeling of late summer in the air these days. The morning mist hangs thick and lingers longer and the fields are wet with dew. We’re rolling down the sides of the hoop houses each night to keep the tomatoes steadily ripening. The foliage on the winter squash patch has begun to die back, and the bright orange, deep tan, and dark green fruits that have been hiding all summer are revealed. Yet another seasonal transition on the farm is underway.
This is my favorite time of year on the farm. The crazy rush of spring and early summer has calmed, and the literal and figurative fruits of our labor are everywhere. I love the quality of light as the sun sits a bit lower in the sky, and the sparkles it makes on the surface of the Ompompanoosuc river running along the lower fields. Despite their interest in our melon crop, I love seeing the flock of this year’s wild turkeys bobbing through the grass. I know we’ll soon be gearing up for our second cutting of hay, bringing in bushels of fall produce, and tackling a new round of fall projects, so I am taking a moment to enjoy this eye of the storm. I hope you have a chance to pick a few flowers in the gardens and appreciate the warmth of the sun on your back this week, too.

Cheers
