The dawn sky was a study in cloud formations this morning as we loaded our third batch of chickens for harvest. Wispy cirrus painted the sky like watercolor brush strokes. A layer of cirrostratus rippled on the horizon. A few puffy cumulus had begun to form for the day. All were tinged pink with the coming sunlight and a layer of mist lent a quietness to the scene.
Each time of day has its own feel and it’s own sky at the farm. I can visit the same field in the early morning, mid afternoon, and evening and have 3 completely different experiences there. From cool and serene, to hot and busy, to long shadows and humming insects, it’s like seeing the scene through different lenses. Lately we’ve even been peeking through the starry night lense with a few late night irrigation or raccoon monitoring visits.
As I write this the cirrus clouds have dissipated and cotton ball cumulus are floating in the blue sky. We’re racing around tedding hay, harvesting corn, and moving the next batch of chickens to the field. The early morning quiet is gone with the mist, but evening’s calm awaits at the end of a busy day.
