CSA week 17; Fall Weather!

Chickens in a pasture at Sweetland Farm VT

This is hands down my favorite time of year at the farm. This morning I practically swam to the field through mist and dew to check on the sweet corn. As I swished through the wet grass a flock of wild turkeys suddenly materialized out of the swirling white blanket and watched me pass. We had a low temperature of 41 here last night, so I hurried home from the field to a welcome cup of hot tea and watched as the mist lifted to reveal a gorgeous sunny day. By 9am I was dropping my sweatshirt in the grass as we unloaded hay bales!

The clarity of the air is what really gets me this time of year. Whether we are setting up irrigation on the newly germinated fall crops, feeding “drops” apples to the pigs from our neighbors’ trees (thanks!), or harvesting overflowing crates of veggies, it pays to look up from time to time to take in the blues, greens and first few twinges of red. Even picking rocks (a demoralizing job at times) gave us a chance to admire the rippling grass in the hayfield below and search the sky for raptors playing in the air currents above. The forecast is great all week, so I hope many of you make it out to the farm to enjoy the beauty of this time of year!

Cheers, Norah and the Sweetland Crew
