Despite the cooler weather and feeling of fall in the air, we’re still going full-tilt at the farm (hence this late newsletter)! People often ask us if things are starting to wind down at this time of year, and while the peak work-load of midsummer is behind us, we’ve still got plenty to keep us busy. This week, in addition to a bumper veggie harvest, we are harvesting our last batch of pasture-raised chickens, and moving the rapidly growing turkeys into their mobile houses. The pigs, too, get a move to fresh pasture this week. They will enjoy munching on the succulent stems and leaves of the buckwheat cover crop that I wrote about a few weeks ago, now that the blossoms are done and the bees have moved on to other forage. In the hoop houses we have pulled out the first succession of tomatoes and are preparing to plant kale, scallions, lettuce, and bok choy for winter harvests. And in the veggie fields the battle with the weeds continues; we’re tractor cultivating, hand weeding, and mowing in an attempt to keep weeds from going to seed and creating more work for next year!
With chilly nights and lingering river fog in the mornings we are busting out gloves for harvest and closing up the hoop houses at night. But by lunchtime the sun is strong enough that warm clothes are cast aside and doors flung open so no-one cooks! We’re relishing these glorious fall days as we gear up for late season projects.
Cheers
