Put on your back braces, it’s heavy lifting season at Sweetland. To date, we have harvested 4,933 pounds of apples, with a final round of late season varieties still to go. Last week saw us filling every empty storage tote with winter squash, and then scavenging more bins to finish the job. And this week we’ll be digging sack after sack of potatoes and sweet potatoes to store in our root cellar. Many thanks to the farm crew for all the hard work and heavy lifting!
With October upon us, this is traditionally the time of year to fill the larders in preparation for winter. We love bringing in the long-season crops that have been biding their time in the fields all summer long, getting bigger and sweeter and heavier by the day. Although there can be some frantic moments figuring out just where to store all of this food (we’re down to our last harvest crate, the coolers are full, and there’s still more to pick!), ultimately this is a good problem to have. We know our stand will be stocked, our CSA bountiful, and our soup pot hearty right through the coldest days ahead.
As you stagger home with this week’s weighty share, remember that many of the veggies you bring home over the next few weeks are great keepers, so stock your own larder and settle in for cooking season!
Cheers, Norah and the Sweetland Crew

Candied Candy Roaster Squash (BTW, I wasn’t quite ready to go full-on holiday glutoney, so I halved the butter and sugar and it was still delicious!)
