Dear Sweetlanders,
With leaves falling all around us and temperatures on a downward trend, we are in the Season of Transition. Fields are being stripped of the last warm-season crops, the root cellar and coolers are bulging at the seams, and Fern has been remarking that “the pigs turned into bacon and we’ll get more piglets in the spring.” To everything there is a season… As much as I’ll miss the long warm days of summer, there’s a certain satisfaction and relief as we transition to the colder months.
Meanwhile, many of our crew are on the cusp of transitions as well. We’ve got some folks headed home soon to reunite with families in Jamaica, others waiting to hear from college admissions offices, some swapping houses at the farm, and a soon-to-be-new-dad! Everyone seems to be putting away their tank tops and breaking out the long johns, and field talk has turned from ice cream flavors to hot soup recipes.
I’m re-learning from Fern that transitions can be difficult, but I hope to teach her that they can also be rewarding. I’m excited that as field work slows we’ll be able to take stock of where we’ve been and pick up some of the projects that were put on hold during the height of the growing season. We’ll be breaking out the chop saw to keep working on our new barn, putting plastic on our new greenhouse, and working on more housing for our farm crew, to name a few. Never a dull moment around here, and the transitions between types of work keep it interesting!
Cheers, Norah and the Sweetland Crew
