CSA Week 3; Calendar flip

It is with great relief (and a healthy knock on wood) that we flip the calendar to June and leave the danger of frost in the rearview mirror. While our official last frost date is June 1st, we have become accustomed to warm weather earlier and earlier. With that in mind and 10 warm nights in the forecast, we went to town early last week transplanting many of our tender summer crops. A field full of squash, several beds of peppers and eggplant, our first succession of sweet corn, and dozens of varieties of flowers joyfully hit the dirt. Summer! And then the forecast changed. After a morning of heavy rain on Saturday the clouds lifted just in time for evening temperatures to begin to drop. The forecast was suddenly calling for 36, and we’ve found that our farm is usually 6-8 degrees colder than the predictions.

With an all-hands effort we checked to make sure irrigation was ready to turn on in all the fields and prepared for an all nighter. Sure enough, by 1am the thermometer read 36 degrees and it was go time. Many thanks to Francisco and Alex, who made the rounds starting pumps, troubleshooting leaks, and even covering a few last minute beds with remay by truck headlight. Thanks to their efforts, Sunday morning dawned on wet but healthy plants. The latent heat released as the water turns to ice helps maintain a steady temperature above freezing on the leaf tissue, but it only works if the water is continuous during the cold snap. So, although Mother Nature made her point that it wasn’t quite June yet, we squeaked through and I can’t wait to taste the fruits of our efforts!

Meanwhile, if you thought May was busy on a farm you haven’t seen June yet! There’s lots more planting to do, weeds to cultivate, harvests are getting bigger each week, and the hay is looking almost ready to cut. Here we go!

Cheers
