Greetings from Sweetland
Today a gray tree frog saved me. The morning wasn’t off to a good start, with various pieces of equipment malfunctioning, the irrigation filter clogged again, my house in shambles after a long weekend of haying, and a to-do list a mile long. When I lifted the lid on the irrigation pump and the hinge broke, I was on the verge of meltdown. The tirade going on in my head probably shouldn’t be repeated in polite company, but the gist was “why can’t anything just WORK when I need it to?!? On a diversified farm with many different critical pieces of equipment and not enough time for repairs I’ll admit that this scene has happened before. We’ve all been there.
Luckily, just before the innocent empty bucket that was standing nearby got an undeserved kick, I noticed the tree frog. He was hunched under the lid that I had just lifted, watching me placidly. His gray-green skin blended with the weathered wood of the pump house and his black eyes winked at me. Despite the fact that his dark hiding place had just had the roof torn off he didn’t seem disturbed, and just sat there looking at me. After my initial startle, I chuckled, and that was my saving grace. A bit of perspective crept back in and took a foothold. The sun was shining. There were 4500 dry hay bales stacked in the barn. The crops were growing. And a frog was winking at me. I took a breath and got back to work, with a bit more lightness in my heart. Thanks, little guy.
Cheers
