You’ve probably heard the term “backhanded compliment,” those stinging insults disguised as flattery. But have you ever heard of the opposite; a front handed insult? I hadn’t, until I started searching for a phrase to describe how I feel about the pests that munch on our crops. After carefully nurturing our seedlings in the greenhouse for their first 4-8 weeks of life, we send them out into the fields to mature in the great wide open. There, they meet with a host of hungry wildlife that would be all too happy to dine on our delicious plants. From cucumber beetles to potato bugs, woodchucks to deer, leek moths to vine borers, there’s a menagerie of pests out there to keep an eye on. We try to deter them with large sheets of protective row cover, electric fences, resistant varieties, and organic sprays. But chances are at the end of the day you may find a few nibbles out of your arugula or “fras” in your cabbage. Enter the front handed insult.
I keep telling myself that what these pests are really trying to convey is just how delicious our veggies are! With a whole ecosystem full of edibles, they chose OUR plants to munch. Thanks, guys, we appreciate your vote of confidence! Don’t worry, humans; we’ll keep pulling out all the stops to keep our veggies safe for you. But if you should find a little stowaway or “love bite” on your Sweetland produce, just take it as evidence that our veggies are THAT GOOD!
