CSA Week 7; When it rains it pours!

Greetings from Sweetland

When it rains it pours, and boy did it pour last weekend! After a month of irrigating the veggie fields regularly, our ponds were starting to look a little low. But 2.5″+ of rain has them brimming again. In the fields the plants are responding with vigor. I swear the sunflowers grew 6″ overnight, the hay fields are green and lush again after the first cut being baled, the veggies are growing great gangbusters, and the weeds are threatening to outpace them.

With all this new growth and a week of intense haying behind us we are full-tilt in the veggie fields. The heading on our crew schedule is “Veggie Catch-Up Week,” and we’re racing to plant, weed, and harvest as fast as we can. The “Rains It Pours” paradigm is unfortunately rearing its head in the form of equipment breakdowns, too, so we’ll be doing much of the transplanting and weeding the old fashioned way this week. We’re looking forward to some sunny days and smooth sailing ahead!

Cheers

Week 7 Harvest

PYO Soft Opening! As the first flowers begin to bloom in our pick-your-own garden, feel free to snip one to stick behind your ear or take home. They will be ready for heavier cutting and big bouquets soon! There are also collard greens that are ready to harvest. Look for orange flagging tape next to any crop that is open for picking, scissors hanging from the Taj-Ma-Bulletin-Board, and ask the crew member on pickup duty for tips and tricks.
