CSA Week 8; Nourishing body & soul

My mom – a botanist turned nurse practitioner turned botanical artist – braided the threads of plants, health, and beauty throughout her life. Healthful bodies came from healthy food. Dinners were harvested from our garden while learning the botanical parts of the plants. And flower and pressed plant specimens collected from fields and forests were arranged in simple, natural portraits that spoke to the organic beauty of the natural world. It seems her influence may have worn off on me!

I grow food for a living. My productivity can be measured in bushels of corn, flats of tomatoes, pounds of chicken, and fields without weeds. But I also like to think that I grow health and beauty for a living. Every CSA member that crunches a green bean in the pick-your-own garden, takes a walk around the farm to stretch their desk-weary legs, or nestles a colorful bouquet of our flowers into their favorite vase is another measure of success. That’s why I was so excited when we connected with the artists at AVA Gallery and found a way to offer nature-inspired art workshops at Sweetland this summer. The idea of making art using plants collected from the gardens while surrounded by the scenery of the farm (and ideally munching on cherry tomatoes!) draws those threads close together again. I love the idea of nourishing both the body and the soul from the same source. Whether you make it out to one of the upcoming workshops or not, I hope your CSA share is braiding some health and beauty into your daily routines!

Cheers
