As of 10pm on Sunday we are DONE with our first round of haying for the season! Whew! With so many rainy days in June we had to take advantage of any 3-day stretch of sun we could find, working late into the evening on 6 occasions to pack the barn to capacity. The final trailer load brought the stack right to the end of the barn, with not a foot to spare! Many thanks and kudos to our crew for putting in some long, hot, dusty days. I hope the popsicles helped!
We can now turn our attention to catching up on some of the other things that are clamoring for our attention around the farm. Irrigation needs to be set up on newly transplanted crops. Fences need to be mowed under and electrified to keep the deer and woodchucks at bay. Animals are ready to be moved to fresh pasture. And at some point soon this baby needs to be born! As we make our lists this week it is all about prioritization, with factors like pumpkins starting to vine across the paths and new corn successions looking thirsty guiding the order of operations. We’re excited to start “flipping beds” as some of the early season crops finish up and late season ones take their place. And as the seasonal cycle continues we’ll punctuate it with evening trips to the swimming hole, birthday cakes at morning meeting, and mid-day farm cat antics.
Cheers
