Winter Share Week 4; Cooking up a storm!

OK, I know Thanksgiving is supposed to be all about the turkey, and I’m proud that our beautiful pasture-raised birds will grace the center of many of your tables next week. But what I’m REALLY excited about when I sit down to a Thanksgiving meal are the veggies. The sweet, savory, nutty, and downright satisfying flavors of fall crops are something I look forward to all year long, and with a bumper share this week I plan to be cooking up a storm in preparation for the holiday.

All during the growing season we are often too busy to give justice to the crops we grow, so at Thanksgiving I try to take the time to slow down and really appreciate the act of preparing the food we’ve worked so hard to grow. While trimming the Brussels sprouts, I remember transplanting the fragile seedlings in June and scrambling to set up irrigation. Peeling the butternut squash, I soak in the deep orange color that comes from growing in healthy soils. Mashing the potatoes, I smile at the memory of Fern covered in dirt from head to toe after a successful “treasure hunt” for the biggest AND the smallest tuber. And sitting down to a mouth-watering meal that was grown on our land, by our amazing crew, and enjoyed by our family and community, I look forward to raising a toast to another season of harvests, come and gone.
May you all raise your own toasts to the land, the producers, and your loved ones this week. May you breathe in the scents of caramelizing onions, whip up your creamiest mashed potatoes, and crunch through the crisp outer leaves of a roasted Brussels sprout to find the soft, steamy heart inside. And save room for pie! May you cook, cook, cook, and eat, eat, eat. And don’t forget to give thanks between bites!

Cheers, Norah and the Sweetland Crew
