The winter solstice is upon us. Mornings move a little slower. Crops in the hoop houses hunker down under remay blankets. Our daily paths around the farm shrink to the barnyard circuit. And early evening shadows send us hurrying for home with woodstoves and hot soup in mind.
The days of bringing in the last load of June hay as the sky fades at 9pm seem far in the past. Which is probably a good thing! On a farm where sustainability is the overarching goal, some seasonal work balance is key. Much of our farm crew has headed home for the winter, and those of us who stay to “hold down the fort” are ready for a change of pace, too.
This week, with our menorah burning on the kitchen table and our Christmas tree glowing in the living room, we celebrate the light while also relishing the dark. The next growing season will be here before we know it, so we’ll enjoy this quiet moment while we can. Here’s hoping you are warm and cozy on this solstice week, too.
Cheers,
Norah and the Sweetland Crew
